Subject analytics: class performance and outlier detection

How to read the subject analytics view: class averages, score distribution, grade band breakdown, and how to identify students who need intervention before report cards go home.

Before you begin

  • Mark entry is complete and submitted for at least one component (article 6.3).
  • You are logged in as Principal, Class Teacher, or Subject Teacher.

Opening subject analytics

  1. Go to Subject Analytics.
  2. Select the class section and subject.
  3. Select the assessment period: CA1, CA2, Exam, or Final (all components combined).

Summary statistics

At the top of the analytics view, five summary statistics are shown:

  • Class Average, mean score for all students who sat the assessment
  • Highest Score, the maximum score in the class
  • Lowest Score, the minimum score (excluding absent students who were scored NS)
  • Pass Rate, percentage of students who scored at or above the passing threshold (default 40%)
  • Students Below Pass, count of students below the pass threshold

Score distribution histogram

The histogram shows the distribution of scores across 10-point bands (0–9, 10–19 … 90–100). A bell-shaped distribution centred around 60–70 is typical for a well-calibrated assessment. A bimodal distribution (two peaks) may indicate that some students need additional support while others are ready for enrichment.

Grade band breakdown

A pie or bar chart shows how many students fell into each grade band (A1, B2 … F9). This is useful for:

  • Quickly seeing how many students failed
  • Identifying if the entire class performed poorly (which may indicate a problem with teaching or the assessment itself)
  • Comparing distribution across subjects to see which subjects are most challenging for the cohort

Student table and outlier detection

Below the charts, a sortable table shows every student with their score, grade, and whether they are flagged as an outlier:

  • Low outlier, students who scored more than 2 standard deviations below the class average. Flagged in amber.
  • Absent (NS), students who did not sit the assessment. Flagged in grey.
  • Consistent low performer, students who have scored below the pass threshold in all three components. Flagged in red.

Click a student row to see their full score breakdown and a link to their profile.

Class comparison across subjects

  1. Go to Subject Analytics → Class Overview.
  2. Select the class section and assessment period.
  3. A bar chart shows the class average for every subject side by side. This makes it easy to spot which subject the class is struggling with most.
  4. Click a subject bar to drill into that subject's analytics.
Review outliers before generating report cards. Check the red-flagged students and confirm their scores are correct, a consistent low performer may have a data entry error (e.g. 14 entered as 4) that is easier to fix before the card goes home than after.

Common mistakes

  • Looking only at the class average and missing bimodal distributions, a 60% class average may hide the fact that half the class is scoring 80% and half is scoring 40%.
  • Not reviewing the NS (absent) students, if a student is showing NS for all components, they may be enrolled but not attending, which is a different issue from a student who sat the exam but was missed during mark entry.
