Parent view: homework, grades, and the academic portal

A walkthrough of everything parents can see and do in the academic section of the parent portal: current homework tasks, subject grades when released, and report cards at end of term.

Before you begin

  • The parent has accepted their invitation to School Vault and logged into the parent portal.
  • The class teacher has assigned homework or published grades.

The Academic tab in the parent portal

Parents access the academic section by tapping Academic in the bottom navigation of the parent portal. The Academic tab has three sections:

  • Homework, current and past homework tasks
  • Grades, CA scores as they are released by the school
  • Report Card, end-of-term report (available when published)

Homework

The Homework section lists all homework tasks assigned to the child's class, sorted by due date (most urgent first). For each task, parents can see:

  • Subject and title
  • Full description and any attached worksheet (tap to download)
  • Due date (shown as days remaining: "Due in 2 days")
  • Completion status: Not started / Done at Home / Marked

Marking homework done at home

  1. Tap the homework task.
  2. Tap Mark as Done at Home.
  3. Optionally, type a note for the teacher (e.g. "She found question 3 easy but struggled with question 4.").
  4. Optionally, upload a photo of the completed work.
  5. Tap Save. The teacher sees your note the next morning.
Leave a note even for easy homework. A note like "He finished all questions and asked for more" helps the teacher know which children are ready to be challenged further. You are giving the teacher information they cannot get in a 30-child classroom.

Grades

The Grades section shows the child's scores as the school releases them during the term. The school controls what is visible, the admin may release CA1 scores early in the term to let parents track progress, or hold all scores until the report card is published.

When grades are visible, parents see:

  • Subject name
  • CA1 score (out of the component maximum)
  • CA2 score (when released)
  • Exam score (when released)
  • Total and grade band
If you do not see any grades in this section, the school has not yet released them. Contact the class teacher or school office, do not assume there is a technical problem.

Report card

At the end of term, when the school publishes report cards, a notification appears in the parent portal. To view the report card:

  1. Tap Report Cards.
  2. Select the term (current or previous terms are available).
  3. The report card displays on screen. Tap Download PDF to save or print it.

Past terms

Parents can view report cards from all previous terms while their child is enrolled. After the child leaves the school, report cards remain accessible for 12 months. After 12 months, they are archived, contact support@schoolvault.ng to request access to archived records.

Common mistakes

  • Parents marking homework done before the child has actually done it, the teacher will discover this when collecting physical homework. It undermines the communication value of the "Done at Home" status.
  • Not checking the Homework section daily, tasks appear as soon as the teacher assigns them, which may be the same evening as the following day's deadline.
